Clone templates in Jira
Creating templates based on Jira’s native issue structure is a simple and effective way to streamline recurring work. Clone Expert allows you to treat any existing issue – from a single task to a full hierarchy of linked work items – as a reusable template that can be cloned and adjusted as needed.
When to use this
Use templates if you:
- Regularly create similar tasks, epics, or workflows
- Want to standardize onboarding, campaigns, sprint planning, or service delivery
- Need to clone predefined hierarchies, but still want to adjust them before use
- Prefer working with native Jira features over complex automation
How it works
- Create your template using standard Jira issues
Build your template just like any other task, story, or epic – with children, sub-tasks, descriptions, custom fields, and checklists.
- Mark it as a template (optional)
-
- Use a label (e.g., template)
- Or create a custom field like “Template = Yes”
- Or simply document its purpose in the summary/description
- Store your templates
-
- Option 1: Keep templates in the same project where you’ll use them
- Option 2: Create a dedicated “Templates” project to separate them from active work
- Clone when needed using Clone Expert
-
- Open the template issue
- Click Clone issue / Clone template
- Use Clone Expert’s table view and advanced options to adjust the work item to your current needs.
- Create ready-to-plan items
With just a few clicks, your template becomes a tailored set of issues – correctly linked, formatted, and scheduled.
Tips
- Templates can be single work items (e.g. recurring task) or entire structures (e.g. Epic → Stories → Sub-tasks)
- You can build templates using native Jira features only – no scripts or custom apps required
- Combine with placeholders for even more dynamic templates
