Default clone settings

Default clone settings allow Jira administrators to define which cloning options are pre-selected when users open the Clone or Quick Clone dialog.

These settings help standardize the cloning experience across the Jira instance while still letting users adjust options for an individual clone.

For example, if Attachments is enabled in Default settings, the Attachments checkbox will be selected automatically whenever a user opens the clone dialog. The user can still clear the checkbox before starting the clone.

Configure global default settings

To configure default clone settings:

  1. Open Jira settings.
  2. Select Manage apps.

3. In the Clone Expert section, select Default settings.

4. Configure the options that should be pre-selected when users open the clone dialog.

5. Click Save.

Note

Global default settings apply across the Jira instance.

Available default settings

Include

Choose which content should be included by default:

  • Sub-tasks
  • Attachments
  • Watchers
  • Comments
  • Issue links

When you select an option here, the corresponding checkbox is automatically selected when a user opens the clone dialog.

Linked Issues clone strategy

Define the default strategy used when cloning linked child work items:

  • Child issues cloned to the project where child issues already exist
  • Child issues cloned to the destination project

The selected strategy is pre-selected in the standard Clone dialog.

Create links between original and cloned work items

Enable Create a link between cloned work items to have this option selected by default in the clone dialog.

When enabled, you can also choose the default Link type, for example duplicates.

Users can change both options before starting an individual clone.

How default settings work

Default settings define the initial state of the Clone and Quick Clone dialogs.

They do not lock the configuration. A user can still:

  • select or clear individual options,
  • change the linked work items clone strategy,
  • change whether links should be created,
  • select another link type.

Changes made by a user in an individual clone dialog affect that clone only and do not modify the administrator-defined defaults.
